Hygrophorus speciosus Pk. Cap 2-6cm across, convex then expanding and sometimes knobbed; bright orange-red to orange or golden yellow, sometimes fading to more orangy yellow over the margin; smooth and very sticky. Gills decurrent, distant to subdistant, narrow; waxy white to yellowish. Stem 40-100 x 4-l0mm, solid, enlarging toward base; white stained yellow or orange by slimy veil or veil remnants. Veil thin and very sticky. Flesh soft; white to yellowish. Odor mild. Taste mild. Spores ellipsoid, nonamyloid, 8-10 x 4.5-6µ. Deposit white. Habitat singly, scattered, or clustered on humus and needle duff in moist areas under conifers, particularly larch. Common and sometimes abundant. Found widely distributed in North America. Season August-October. Edible. |
